IU Bloomington is one of just eight U.S. universities to receive a Gold Bicycle Friendly University Award from the League of American Bicyclists. The award recognizes the university’s commitment to making bicycling more safe, comfortable, and accessible for riders on and off campus.
IU has the second-highest ranking in the gold category, after Arizona State University-Tempe. Overall, the Bicycle Friendly University program includes 204 colleges and universities in 42 states and the District of Columbia.
The IU Bloomington campus was initially recognized with a Bicycle Friendly University Award in 2011. Infrastructure improvements moved IUB up to a Silver Award in 2017 and a Gold Award in 2021, following creation of the Ballantine Bike Hub and the Seventh Street bike lane. The designation is newly evaluated every four years.
Among other recent support for the IU cycling community, IU Bloomington officially launched a partnership with Bike Index in fall 2025 to mitigate theft or removal of bikes and personal scooters. The one-time Bike Index registration is free and includes updates on campus bike events, amenities, policy changes, safety issues, and more.
IU Bikes Month in April 2025 highlighted a series of events that included “Bike-urious? Try a Bike on Campus,” free pop-up bike repair clinics, discounts on bikes from IU Surplus, and a giveaway for a Biking Essentials Kit.
IU Transportation maintains close campus partnerships, including with the Office of Sustainability, to continue evolving and improving.
IU also offers a free online course, Ride Smart: Bicycle and E-Scooter Traffic Skills, open to anyone with an interest in learning more.
