2021 Transportation Demand Management Report
About us
Transportation Demand Management works to encourage and enable all IU Bloomington faculty, staff, and students to use more active or sustainable modes of transportation like carpooling, walking, biking, and transit. There are many reasons why someone chooses the mode that they do; some are within their control, and some are not. We conduct this survey regularly to understand how people get to, from, and around campus. And to ultimately create a more efficient transportation system.
Method
The 2021 survey was distributed to a 30% random sample of full-time students, faculty, and staff. The survey received a 27% response rate from students and a 41% response rate from faculty and staff. It is likely that this survey did not capture a representative sample of full-time employees without regular access to a computer. Thus, future surveys will aim to reach out to those employees through other means.

What mode do faculty and staff respondents primarily use to get to campus?
- 62% of faculty/staff respondents said that they drive for every commute to work trip and 36% occasionally use another mode (e.g. walk, bike, transit, carpool, etc.).
What is the mean percentage of time students use each mode to get to campus?

34% of faculty/staff respondents and 85% of student respondent reported living than 3 miles from campus.
Both faculty and staff respondents in this category reported commuting to campus an average of 4 days/week.
Of the faculty/staff who live 3 miles or less:
- 32% drive 100% of the time
- 27% drive 50-99% of the time
- 5% drive 25-49% of the time
- 18% drive 1-24% of the time
- 18% do not drive to campus and instead use other modes of transportation
